Cook – England

I am from Poole, a seaside town in the south of England and so for as long as I can remember I have been interested in marine environments and the wildlife they support. My interest in the natural world later led me to study natural history illustration at university and these interests, alongside a deepening concern for animal welfare, compelled me to become an animal rights activist. I’m proud to have been involved in various campaigns in the past few years that call for the abolition of animal exploitation and abuse in all its numerous forms and I know this is something I will be committed to for the rest of my life. I joined Sea Shepherd as a crewmember, having been an onshore volunteer for a number of years after recognising that Sea Shepherd was the only organisation that really does everything it can to prevent illegal poaching of whales.

My position on board The Bob Barker is in the galley as a cook. It’s a role I feel at home with after working in many catering jobs in the past, including managing the kitchen in a large nursing home and running my own vegan cake stall at a local market. Before joining Sea Shepherd, I spent two years with some close friends opening a vegan supermarket where I now live in Southampton. It involved developing recipes for our fresh food counter and sourcing a big range of products in a bid to bring veganism to the mainstream. Whilst working on this huge project I was also extremely privileged to work for a human rights charity as a support worker for women and children who had been trafficked into the UK. I ultimately believe the weak and the vulnerable should never be exploited by those more powerful and it is this reasoning that has resulted in me being willing to join the front lines in the fight against the illegal slaughter of whales.
