Sea Shepherd is part of the Stop Adani Alliance that represent almost 40 organisations and millions of Australians calling for an end to the Adani Carmichael coal mine, in defence of the Great Barrier Reef and liveable climate for our children.
Sea Shepherd’s flagship the M/Y Steve Irwin is travelling up the east coast of Australia to Abbot Point, with a dozen stops to acknowledge and engage the great work of the Stop Adani Alliance and Australian communities standing strong for the Reef.
Today, the Steve Irwin vessel and crew arrived into Agnes Water - 1770, Queensland, to a wonderful beach welcoming, riding on a wave of community support from Melbourne, Sydney, Coffs Harbour, Byron Bay, Gold Coast, Brisbane and Noosa in defence of the Reef.
Jeff Hansen, Managing Director of Sea Shepherd, states: “Sea Shepherd is proud to stand with the wonderful communities of 1770 and Agnes Water, whose home is located at the southern end of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. These beautiful Australian coastal towns are well known holiday destinations for Australian families that rely on tourism and a healthy Great Barrier Reef.
Sea Shepherd has a strong connection with Agnes Water & 1770, being a great support base for our ocean defence campaigns and home to a veteran, courageous and inspiring Sea Shepherd Captain in Wyanda Lublink. Together, with this community, we have shared some great victories for the oceans and we are proud to stand strong with these towns in opposition of the Adani coal mine, in defence of our Great Barrier Reef and a liveable climate for our children.”
“Australians are waking up to Adani’s lies, false promises of jobs that jump from 10,000 down to 1,400, that put at risk 65,000 direct and indirect Australian jobs our Great Barrier Reef supports. The opposition to the Adani coal mine is only growing, with the Australian public choosing coral over coal, its time the Australian Government reflected the will of the people of Australian and revoke Adani’s approval,” Mr Hansen said.
