Sea Shepherd is part of the Stop Adani Alliance that represent almost 40 organisations and millions of Australians calling for an end to the Adani Carmichael coal mine in defence of the Great Barrier Reef and a liveable climate for our children. Sea Shepherd’s flagship the M/Y Steve Irwin is travelling up the east coast of Australia to Abbot Point with a dozen stops to acknowledge and engage the great work of the Australian communities standing strong for the Reef.
Sea Shepherd crew gathered at Pratten Park Broadbeach on the Gold Coast, with the Stop Adani Gold Coast, local Sea Shepherd ground support and the wonderful Goldie community.
Luna Derkley spokesperson for Stop Adani Gold Coast said, "Burning coal is one of the leading drivers of climate change and climate change is warming our oceans and killing our Great Barrier Reef. The Adani coal mine is our line in the sand. We do not want another coal mine, which would be the largest in the southern hemisphere, being built when we should be moving towards a renewable energy future for Australia."

The state Labor government vetoed a $1 billion loan of public money at November’s election but LNP Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment and our local member for Moncrieff Steven Ciobo, is trying to find ways to fund Adani through the Export Finance and Insurance Corporation he manages (EFIC).
Citizens of the Gold Coast are not happy and will be joining with Sea Shepherd and Stop Adani Gold Coast to form a giant human line in the sand requesting Minister Ciobo to rule out public funding for the Adani coal mine."
Jeff Hansen, Managing Director of Sea Shepherd Australia stated: ‘Sea Shepherd is proud to stand strong with the Gold Coast community who want to see the world's largest living thing on earth, our iconic Great Barrier Reef protected, they want a liveable climate for our children and do not want the Adani coal mine to proceed.
"Sea Shepherd is calling on the Australian Government to represent the interests of the majority of Australians that oppose the Adani coal mine and to represent the 65,000 direct and in-direct Australian jobs that a healthy Great Barrier Reef supports, and not some shonky operator from India that has wrecked communities and the environment.
"Adani has other investments in renewables, and we encourage Adani to go the next step here in Australia and take the money planned for the Adani Carmichael coal mine and invest in jobs and renewables in Australia. If Adani were to do this, they would be applauded and Sea Shepherd would be the first to stand with them and acknowledge this as would the majority of Australians," Jeff concluded.
