“Fish farms are wreaking havoc on the Tasmanian marine environment. From the slaughter of seals, the pollution of public waterways to the impact on whale migration routes, this out of control industry needs to be held accountable for the damage its creating,” said Adam Burling spokesperson for Sea Shepherd Australia.
“Many of the fish in fish farms are sick and in a very poor state, being kept alive with a cocktail of chemicals and even fed dyes to make their flesh pink. From an impact on the environment or on us, there is nothing healthy about eating and supporting this destructive industry.
Sea Shepherd teams have been part of campaigns in Scotland and Canada against the damage fish farms inflict, they have seen first hand the devastation they cause. The State Government must rein in this industry and halt the further expansion of aquaculture in Tasmania’s pristine waters,” Mr Burling stated.
“The current process for ASC certification and consultation is a farce. None of these fish farms are sustainable by any measure. The consultations appears to be ignoring community concerns and obvious environmental impact,” said Mr Burling.
