Sea Shepherd Australia in conjunction with No Shark Cull Inc are pleased to advise that due to community crowd funding efforts, we have been able to secure the following community forums in order for the public to meet and ask questions of “Shark Spotters.”
Shark Spotters has been operating for over eleven years in Cape Town, South Africa, decreasing the number of unwanted shark encounters, while also building local knowledge of the marine environment.
The program, which was started by caring members of the community, is currently the only one of its kind and balances the need to protect people, as well as marine animals.
Clever in its simplicity, Shark Spotters uses a system of spotters, flags and alarms to alert ocean users of shark activity in the area.
All too often, ocean users in Australia are unaware of shark sightings before entering the water, thereby making an uninformed decision. A simple flag system could help to prevent this.
With the South-West of WA, northern New South Wales and potentially Coolangatta in Queensland offering some good vantage points to spot sharks, we would like to have the project manager and field officer from Shark Spotters visit our coast line and determine, from their experience, whether the program could be replicated.
